Vital Records
The Vital Records Division is responsible for the registration, maintenance, and issuance of birth and death records. This office provides certified copies of birth and death certificates for events occurring in Wells County from 1883 to the present.
In addition, our office can issue many birth and death records from other Indiana counties through the statewide electronic records system. Records for events occurring in 2008 or later are generally available. Availability of records prior to 2008 varies and may not be accessible through the system. If you need a record from another county that occurred before 2008, please contact our office to verify availability before submitting your request.
Certified birth certificates are needed for many purposes, including school registration, travel, insurance, obtaining a passport, and establishing personal and property rights. Many hospitals and birthing facilities provide souvenir certificates with handprints or footprints at the time of birth. These documents are not legal birth certificates and cannot be used for official purposes.
A certified birth certificate is the official legal record of a person's birth and is issued by a county or state government agency.
Certified death certificates are often required for estate settlement, insurance claims, and other legal matters. Costs and application procedures for obtaining birth and death certificates may vary between health departments."
